Grade 1

The beginning of First Grade is an exciting time for young children! A child's initial feelings about being a student are formed during this period. The first days of school are filled with discussions of goals, rules and expectations in the classroom. Learning to read, making connections between numerical concepts and their symbols, meeting new friends and becoming part of the "Big Kids" world are of immediate concern to First Graders.

The First Grade allows students to grow at their own rate. Using phonics, basal readers, classic and popular literature, reading is our main focus. Science and Social Studies are covered through the reading program. In Math, First Graders learn how to add and subtract, how to tell time to the hour and the half-hour and how to count coins to $1.00. The First Grade uses a variety of teaching methods and manipulatives to reach the learning styles and needs of all the children.

Miss Kim Scott
First Grade Teacher

This will be my fourth year teaching at SPEC. For the past three years, I have been the Fourth Grade teacher here and I am thrilled that my fourth year will be in First Grade! I am originally from "upstate" New York and although I miss my family sometimes, I absolutely love New Bern, North Carolina and everything that comes with it.

I graduated from Marywood University with my B.S. in Elementary Education with a concentration in Music. As part of my music minor, I studied voice and piano, and was a frequent soloist with the University Choir and Orchestra. Here in New Bern, I have been active with the Craven Messiah Chorus, New Bern Civic Theatre and Rivertowne Repertory Players. Music and theater are two of my favorite activities, besides teaching of course!

I love learning new things and sharing the things I know with my students and anyone who will listen. I am active in St. Paul's Church as the 2nd grade Faith Formation teacher, a cantor and a member of the Gospel and Senior Choirs. Obviously, my love of music permeates all that I do.

This year, I know, we will laugh, learn, love. sing, sign, pray. and more than anything, have fun while getting to know ourselves, and each other.
